Bengaluru: A 25-year-old man from Bengaluru was arrested on Tuesday after stabbing a BMTC bus driver on a crowded bus near Whitefield, causing widespread panic among the passengers. The police swiftly apprehended the accused, who has been identified as Harish Sinha, a BPO employee originally from Jharkhand.

The incident took place when Sinha, who was standing near the door of the bus, was asked by the conductor, Yogesh, to move aside as he was obstructing passengers from boarding and alighting. The situation quickly escalated, leading to Sinha pulling a knife from his bag and attacking the conductor. In a moment of quick thinking, Yogesh managed to jump off the bus and lock the attacker inside, preventing him from escaping.

A video of the chaotic scene has since gone viral on social media, showing the panic among passengers as Sinha not only threatened them but also caused extensive damage to the bus by smashing windows with a hammer. The BMTC issued a statement confirming the damage and explaining that Sinha demanded passengers vacate the bus immediately.

BMTC praised the swift actions of driver Siddalingaswamy, who locked Sinha inside the bus and called for assistance. “We commend our driver for his quick response in containing the situation and ensuring the safety of the passengers. Thanks to his efforts and the help of some passengers, the police and emergency services were alerted in time,” the statement said. The injured conductor, Yogesh, was immediately taken to Vydehi Hospital, where he is now out of danger and recovering.

Further investigations revealed that Sinha had recently been frustrated after failing to secure a job. Police reports suggest that he carried out the attack with the intention of going to jail, stating that he believed prison would provide him with a place to live. A case has been registered, and authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
